The Liberation of Paris as seen by Jean Delpech at the Christofle's gallery

12/12/2024

80 years ago, in December 1944, Jean Delpech exhibited his work in Paris, at 10 rue Royale in the 8th arrondissement. Four months after the Liberation of Paris, he presented the series of monotypes he had produced in August 1944, recounting the clashes that took place between General Leclerc's Second Armoured Division and the French Internal Forces against the German occupiers in Paris.

The artist did not hesitate to stand close to the fighting to illustrate as faithfully as possible the events unfolding before his eyes, such as the shooting that took place on the Place de la Concorde during General de Gaulle's parade. These prints were shown in the gallery of the famous silversmith company Christofle, known for his tableware. Following this exhibition, Jean Delpech collaborated with the brand and designed two ornate platters and three plates decorated with scenes relating to the Liberation of Paris.
