Trophies and monuments

In the immediate post-war period, Jean Delpech created several works of pure imagination, with the trophy as their leitmotif. These highly creative drawings and prints combine accurate depictions of military weaponry with religious and mythological references. Taking up the ancient tradition of the trophy, which consisted of hanging the defeated enemy’s arms and armour from a tree on the battlefield, the artist creates an assemblage of components representing the Wehrmacht’s equipment. But he puts the trophy’s initial motif to new uses, turning it into a sort of bogeyman. He also creates thematic assemblages focusing on aviation and the navy. And then there is the imaginary mausoleum of a tank driver and a paratrooper, combining depictions of military equipment with funerary symbols. These cunningly organised compositions are imbued with remarkable visual power. The artist showcases his stylistic and artistic references, drawn from Asian culture and Medieval and Renaissance iconography alike. Real “graphic inventions”, these works are fascinating reflections on the memorial and emotional aspects of commemorative monuments.
